As previously reported, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded around 6 p.m. on Jan. 19, 2025, to a shooting in the 700 block of East Pleasant Run Parkway. Upon arrival, officers found Kayla Netherland, then 25, in a bathroom suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics transported her to a hospital, where doctors were able to stabilize her but were unable to save the unborn child.

According to a probable cause affidavit, a friend of Netherland arrived at the home around the time of the shooting to do laundry. The friend told police she entered the residence and saw McBride standing over Netherland before he left the home without speaking. She later informed authorities that she believed McBride was responsible for the shooting. Investigators used license plate readers to locate McBride and conducted a traffic stop.

Police said McBride exited the vehicle, which then rolled away after not being placed in park and struck a pole. Authorities reported that he told officers he had planned to turn himself in and stated that the firearm was inside the vehicle. Officers recovered the gun and handwritten notes addressed to Netherland discussing their relationship.

Detectives wrote in the affidavit that the notes referenced McBride’s frustrations about alleged infidelity, the breakdown of the marriage, and his feelings about their relationship. After being advised of his rights, McBride told investigators he was upset that, although they had not finalized their divorce, Netherland had become pregnant by another man. The couple had separated in September 2024.

According to investigators, McBride admitted purchasing a firearm and ammunition days before the shooting. Authorities said he told detectives that on the day of the incident, the two had been together before returning to Netherland’s home, where he shot her multiple times.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears told local media that the case involved deliberate actions carried out with intent.

Police said Netherland underwent multiple surgeries following the shooting, including a procedure related to the loss of her unborn child and additional surgery to treat internal injuries.

The case has drawn attention to issues surrounding domestic violence. Authorities have not indicated any further legal proceedings are pending.
