Man Identified After Fatal Police Standoff in Spencer Shooting Incident

SPENCER MASS, The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office has identified the man who was shot and killed during a standoff involving police at a shopping plaza in Spencer on Tuesday night.
Officials said Patrick Madison, 35, was killed during an exchange of gunfire with officers.
Spencer police initially responded to the area of 20 Main Street around 5 p.m. after receiving reports of an injured person. When officers arrived, they found one individual suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was later transported to UMass Medical Center for treatment.
Authorities said that approximately 12 minutes later, a person matching the suspect’s description was located near West Main Street in Spencer. As officers approached the individual, gunfire was exchanged.
The suspect, later identified as Madison, fled into a Family Dollar store as police pursued him. SWAT officers entered the store and located him barricaded inside a closed bathroom.
According to officials, Madison was killed following an exchange of gunfire inside the building.
During the incident, a Millbury police officer was shot multiple times. Police said the officer was taken to a local hospital and is currently listed in stable condition. Neither the injured officer nor the victim found at 20 Main Street has been publicly identified.
“It was definitely terrifying,” said Jessica St. Cyr, a waitress who works next to the Family Dollar. “I’m still in shock. It’s still hard to believe.”
Millbury Police Chief Brian Lewos said hearing that an officer was injured in the line of duty is always difficult.
“It’s a gut punch, certainly getting the news last night. It can go from zero to 100 pretty quick,” Lewos said.
The Worcester County District Attorney’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident.
