Lansing Man Sentenced to 15 Years After Shooting at Police Officers

LANSING, MICHIGAN, — A Lansing man accused of disarming multiple police officers and shooting one of them in the leg has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
The charges stem from an incident in April 2024 involving Andrial Ched Ortiz, now 30, who was stopped by Lansing Police Department officers at the request of detectives investigating a reported road rage incident. At the time of the traffic stop, Ortiz was on parole for prior convictions that included selling drugs, unarmed robbery, and larceny.
Authorities said officers searched Ortiz’s vehicle and located drugs, after which they attempted to take him into custody. Police reported that Ortiz tried to flee, and a struggle followed. During the confrontation, investigators said Ortiz managed to disarm two officers and used one of the firearms to shoot an officer in the leg.
Federal prosecutors said Ortiz was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The injured officer survived the shooting.
In addition to the federal sentence, Ortiz is still facing multiple state-level charges. Court records show he is charged with 17 felonies, including resisting and obstructing police, disarming a police officer, and several weapons-related offenses.
Ortiz is scheduled to return to state court on February 6 for a probable cause conference related to the pending charges.
