Grandfather Accused of Firearm Storage Violation Following Fatal Shooting of 14-Year-Old

FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP MI, A Fruitport Township trustee is facing a safe storage violation charge following the fatal shooting of his 14-year-old grandson last month, according to court records.
Greg Hulka, 62, who serves as a Fruitport Township trustee, has been charged with one felony count of safe storage violation resulting in death by a minor. Court records indicate that his arraignment could take place as early as Friday.
The victim, Rylen Yager, 14, was killed on January 24 after being shot by another minor who gained access to a firearm inside a home on Romedius Street, located off East Broadway Avenue. Police said the shooting occurred at approximately 7:20 p.m.
Following the incident, the Michigan State Police announced that they assumed control of the investigation due to the involvement of a township employee who is not part of public safety. Authorities have not released further details regarding how the firearm was accessed.
Fruitport Community Schools confirmed Rylen Yager’s death in a message sent to parents the day after the shooting, expressing condolences to the family and school community.
The case remains pending as it moves through the court system, and officials have not released additional information at this time.
