INITIAL REPORT
A significant law enforcement presence responded to The Oaks Mall Saturday afternoon following initial reports of a possible active shooter inside the shopping center.
According to authorities, officers were dispatched after emergency calls indicated gunfire within the mall. As a precaution, the facility was placed on lockdown while police coordinated their response. Shoppers and employees were instructed to shelter in place as officers cleared sections of the building.
Dozens of officers from the Gainesville Police Department, along with assisting agencies, worked to secure the scene. Patrol vehicles, tactical units, and emergency medical personnel were staged outside the mall during the response.
Early in the situation, officials had not confirmed whether shots were fired or whether injuries had occurred, stating they were working to verify the credibility of the initial reports and determine whether a suspect was in custody.
Witnesses described confusion as alarms sounded and shoppers moved to safer areas inside stores and back rooms. Some individuals were escorted out by officers as authorities continued clearing procedures.
Police emphasized that the public should avoid the area while the investigation remains active. Traffic around the mall has been affected due to temporary road closures and emergency vehicle access.
The situation remains ongoing, and officials say additional information will be released as it becomes available.
