MUSKEGON COUNTY, Muskegon County prosecutors say they are reviewing potential charges after a 14-year-old boy died in what police described as an accidental shooting earlier this month.
Rylen Yager died January 24 following a shooting that occurred around 7:20 p.m. in the 2900 block of Romedius Street.
Michigan State Police investigated the incident and submitted a report to Muskegon County prosecutors on Friday, January 30.
Matt Roberts, chief trial attorney for the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office, said prosecutors have been asked to evaluate whether charges are warranted against the homeowner and another juvenile.
Police previously stated that another juvenile was in possession of a firearm when the shooting occurred.
Additional details about the circumstances surrounding the incident have not been released.
Rylen was an eighth-grade student in Fruitport Community Schools.
His obituary described him as a young person whose “creativity knew no limits.”
His family shared that he loved basketball, enjoyed playing Minecraft, collected Pokémon, and often made family members laugh.
“Above all, Rylen was deeply loved and will be remembered for his bright spirit, quick wit, creative soul, and the joy he brought to everyone around him,” the family wrote. “His presence was unforgettable, and his absence will be felt forever.”
