Daughter of Minnesota Governor Candidate Killed in Stabbing

HALLIE TOBLER, the daughter of Republican Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson was stabbed to death over the weekend in what authorities described as a botched murder-suicide at her St. Cloud apartment, prompting her father to suspend his 2026 campaign for governor.
Hallie Marie Tobler, 22, was found with multiple fatal stab wounds inside her locked apartment Saturday evening after police responded to a medical emergency call, according to the St. Cloud Police Department.
Her husband, 23-year-old Dylan Michael Tobler, was also discovered inside the residence suffering from critical injuries that investigators believe were self-inflicted. Police said the injuries were sustained in the moments immediately following the fatal stabbing of his wife.
Authorities stated that both individuals were located inside the couple’s locked apartment, according to reporting from MPR News. Investigators believe the incident stemmed from a domestic violence situation that escalated into a deadly encounter.
Dylan Tobler survived his injuries and is now listed in stable condition. Police said he is expected to face homicide charges in connection with Hallie Tobler’s death once he is released from the hospital.
Following the killing, the Minnesota Republican Party announced that Jeff Johnson, a former St. Cloud city councilman who launched his bid for the Republican nomination for governor in March 2025, has suspended his campaign due to the loss of his daughter.
In a statement released Monday, the party expressed condolences to the Johnson family, describing the loss as devastating and unimaginable. The statement said Johnson decided to step away from the race out of respect for his family as they grieve.
Johnson’s campaign had focused on issues such as crime and immigration, areas that have drawn heightened attention in Minnesota amid recent federal enforcement activity and public protests.
Democratic U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar also shared condolences, saying she and her husband were praying for Hallie Tobler and all those who loved her during what she described as an unimaginably difficult time.
