WEST CHICAGO ILLINOIS, A longtime physical education teacher has resigned from his position at Gary Elementary School following controversy over a social media post that read “GO ICE.”

James Heidorn, who had worked in the district for 14 years, came under scrutiny after posting the message on his personal Facebook page in response to a news story about local police cooperating with federal immigration authorities. The post prompted strong reactions within the predominantly Hispanic community served by the school.

Heidorn later described the experience as “professionally and personally devastating,” stating that he believed his comment reflected personal support for law enforcement and was not directed at any student or family.

Following the post, school officials placed Heidorn on administrative leave while the matter was reviewed. He met with human resources on January 22 and initially submitted a resignation before rescinding it the same day. He was expected to return as the review continued but later resigned again after a hearing with school officials.

West Chicago Mayor Daniel Bovey publicly criticized the post, calling it hurtful and insensitive given the impact immigration enforcement actions can have on families in the community. Some parents and residents expressed concerns that the message created discomfort and anxiety among students.

Heidorn said he felt the situation escalated quickly and that he was not given the opportunity for a full dialogue before resigning. He stated that losing daily contact with students and colleagues has been especially difficult.

In addition to stepping down from his teaching position, Heidorn also lost his role as a soccer coach at a nearby private school.

The incident has sparked broader debate about free expression, professional responsibilities, and the importance of maintaining a supportive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds. Supporters argue that educators are entitled to personal opinions, while critics emphasize the need for sensitivity in school communities.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist Heidorn. As of Sunday, the fundraiser had raised approximately $57,000.

The situation has drawn significant public attention as discussions continue about balancing individual speech with community expectations in educational settings.
