Caltech Research Scientist Identified as Victim in Llano Antelope Valley Shooting

LLANO CALIFORNIA, The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man who was fatally shot inside his Llano residence early Monday morning as 67-year-old Carl Grillmair.
According to a press release issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau, deputies responded to the 30700 block of 165th Street East at approximately 6:10 a.m. on February 16, 2026, following a 9-1-1 report of an assault with a deadly weapon.
Deputies from the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station arrived at the location and discovered Grillmair lying on the front porch of the home, suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso.
Personnel from the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded and initiated life-saving measures. Despite those efforts, Grillmair was pronounced deceased at the scene.
While deputies were investigating the shooting, they also responded to a reported carjacking in the same general area. Authorities identified the carjacking suspect as 29-year-old Freddy Snyder.
Snyder was taken into custody in connection with the carjacking and is currently being held on $2 million bail.
Investigators have not publicly confirmed whether the homicide and the carjacking are directly connected, but both incidents occurred within close proximity and timeframe.
Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Grillmair’s death.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding a possible motive or whether additional suspects are being sought.
