Northridge Community Mourns Death of Dayton Music Teacher Jacob Lorkovic

DAYTON, Ohio — The Northridge community is mourning the unexpected passing of Jacob Lorkovic, a respected teacher and band director whose passion for music and dedication to students made a lasting impression in a short period of time.

The Northridge Local School District shared the news with families in a message expressing deep sorrow, highlighting Mr. Lorkovic’s genuine heart, leadership, and strong commitment to his students. Although he joined the district at the start of the current school year, officials said his positive influence was felt almost immediately.

“Mr. Lorkovic was deeply loved for his passion for students and music, his leadership, and his genuine heart,” the district stated. “His impact on our school and students will never be forgotten.”

Board Vice President Tina Fiore said district leaders held an emergency meeting with band students and their families prior to the public announcement to ensure they had support and space to process the loss.

“Our kids just need love and space to grieve,” Fiore said. “We are holding Mr. Lorkovic’s family in our hearts during this incredibly difficult time.”

Colleagues described Lorkovic as energetic, optimistic, and deeply committed to service, noting that he brought enthusiasm and care to every rehearsal and classroom interaction. Despite being new to the district, administrators said he was already doing exceptional work building meaningful relationships with students and strengthening the band program.

To support students and staff, the high school will be open for counseling and support services on Friday, January 2, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Door 1. Additional counseling resources will also be available when students return to school on Monday, January 5.

Community members will have the opportunity to honor Mr. Lorkovic’s life at a vigil scheduled for Saturday, January 3, at 5:00 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. A smaller vigil will also take place before the home basketball game that evening. All members of the community are welcome to attend.

As the Northridge community comes together in remembrance, students, parents, and staff are being encouraged to keep the Lorkovic family in their thoughts and to support one another during this time of mourning. Jacob Lorkovic is remembered not only as an educator and musician, but as a compassionate presence whose love for music and students will continue to resonate throughout the school he served.
