Laura Beitler’s two daughters, ages 8 and 3, were discovered outside in freezing conditions early Thursday morning at the Extended Stay America hotel in Mentor. Police said a concerned resident called authorities around 12:25 a.m. after spotting the 3-year-old crying outside alone.

Officers reported the child was wearing only a sweater in temperatures around 8 degrees Fahrenheit, with strong winds. She was quickly placed in a warm police cruiser.

Police determined the child had been staying at the hotel with her family. When officers contacted Beitler, she realised her 8-year-old daughter was also missing.

The situation prompted additional officers, sheriff’s deputies, and hotel residents to assist in searching the area. The 8-year-old, who was described as autistic, was later found nearby wearing only a t-shirt and sneakers.

Beitler told local media that she and her five children had recently been evicted and were living at the hotel. She said three of her children have autism and explained she has been struggling with depression and a lack of support.

The children’s father arrived at the scene and took custody of the girls. Police said he had been away earlier due to a family emergency.

Beitler was arrested and charged with endangering children. She later posted bond. Authorities said the children were checked out as a precaution and are safe.

Child Protective Services has become involved and is working with the family on a safety plan. Officials said the children may remain with their mother as long as another adult is present for supervision.

Beitler stated she is overwhelmed and working with CPS while seeking additional help.
