Man Killed, Suspect in Custody After Fight Turns Deadly in Kansas City’s Northland

KANSAS CITY NORTHLAND, One man is dead and another person is in custody after a fight escalated into a deadly shooting Monday morning, according to Kansas City police.
A police spokesperson said officers responded to reports of gunfire around 7:30 a.m. in the 2500 block of Northeast 78th Street. When officers arrived, they found a man lying in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical crews arrived at the scene and immediately began life-saving efforts, but the victim was pronounced dead at the location, police said.
Authorities confirmed that one person was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the area, where they collected evidence and interviewed witnesses.
According to Sgt. Phil DiMartino with the Kansas City Police Department, a preliminary investigation indicates that a dispute between two people who knew each other escalated into a physical fight. During the altercation, shots were fired, striking the victim.
Police have not released details about the nature of the relationship between the individuals involved or what led to the dispute.
The killing marks Kansas City’s fifth homicide of the year, based on data tracked by local media. At the same point last year, the city had recorded seven homicides.
