Man Dies After Falling From Bridge on A38 in Plymouth

PLYMOUTH, A person has died following a serious incident on the A38 in Plymouth on Wednesday afternoon, January 14, after falling from the Manadon Flyover, authorities have confirmed.
Emergency services were alerted at around 2:35 p.m. after concerns were raised for a person’s welfare near Manadon Roundabout. Devon and Cornwall Police said the individual fell from the flyover and was discovered seriously injured on the A38. Despite the swift response from police and ambulance crews, the person was later pronounced dead.
A police spokesperson said officers were called to the scene following reports of concern for a person at the location. The individual had fallen from the Manadon Flyover and was found on the A38 with serious injuries, while ambulance services were also in attendance.
The incident led to a significant emergency response, with multiple police units and ambulances attending the scene. Traffic beneath the flyover was brought to a complete halt as authorities closed the A38 westbound from Marsh Mills toward Manadon. The road was initially shut in both directions, although later updates confirmed that the eastbound carriageway was reopened.
After 4 p.m., Plymouth City Council and Plymouth Highways issued a warning to motorists, advising that the westbound A38 remained closed between Marsh Mills and Manadon and that severe congestion was affecting surrounding roads.
Drivers were urged to avoid the area where possible, as delays were reported on several key routes in and out of the city. Witnesses described traffic as being at a standstill for a prolonged period.
The disruption was further compounded as police in other parts of Plymouth were simultaneously responding to a separate major incident involving the discovery of a suspected explosive device at a building site, placing additional strain on the city’s road network.
Authorities have not released further information about the individual who died. The incident remains under investigation, and road closures were expected to continue for several hours while emergency services completed their work at the scene.
