DETROIT METRO AIRPORT, Authorities are investigating a serious incident at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport after a vehicle crashed into the McNamara Terminal on Friday night, an event officials believe may have been an intentional act linked to a suicide attempt.
Witnesses reported that the vehicle drove through an entrance near the terminal check-in area and struck a Delta Air Lines service counter while airline employees were present. The collision created a loud noise that echoed throughout the terminal and immediately drew the attention of travelers and staff.
According to eyewitness accounts, the driver exited the vehicle moments later with his hands raised and appeared to be speaking, though it was not immediately clear what he was saying or his condition at the time.
Airport police and Transportation Security Administration officers responded within seconds, quickly securing the area and taking the driver into custody. Travelers described the response as fast and well-coordinated, preventing further danger inside the terminal.
“The response was incredibly fast,” said traveler Ali Khalifa, who was inside the terminal at the time. “Police and TSA were there immediately. Everything happened very quickly.”
Airport operations experienced temporary disruptions as investigators examined the scene and assessed damage inside the terminal. Officials said no serious injuries have been reported, and the extent of structural damage remains under review.
