GRPD Investigates Fatal Incident Involving Rapid Bus and Pedestrian

GRAND RAPIDS — Police say a woman died Thursday morning after being struck by a Rapid public transit bus in Grand Rapids. Investigators believe the woman was lying in the roadway before the collision occurred.

The incident happened around 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of South Division Avenue and Buckley Street SE. According to the Grand Rapids Police Department, preliminary information indicates the woman was already in the road prior to being hit by the bus.

“The incident is under investigation by the GRPD Traffic Unit,” police said in a statement, noting that details may change as the investigation continues.

A News 8 crew at the scene observed a bicycle in the roadway marked as evidence. An officer confirmed that the bicycle belonged to the woman, though it was not immediately clear how she ended up in the street.

Police said the crash occurred near Grand Rapids University Preparatory Academy, though the building was unoccupied at the time.

The woman’s name and age have not yet been released. South Division Avenue was closed between Buckley and Logan streets as investigators worked at the scene.
