One person was killed in a fire at an apartment building in Manchester early Thursday morning, according to fire officials.

Crews responded to a reported fire at the Executive Manors apartment building on Union Street just after 12:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy flames coming from the third and fourth floors, with the fire extending into the roof structure.

“Upon arrival, companies encountered heavy fire from floors 3 and 4 extending to the roof structure with multiple victims on balconies and windows,” Manchester Fire Chief Ryan Cashin said in a statement. He added that one occupant jumped from a second-floor balcony, while others were rescued using ground ladders and aerial buckets from fire trucks positioned at both the front and rear of the building.

Fire officials said the blaze was brought under control by approximately 1:50 a.m. Despite rescue efforts, one person died as a result of the fire.

In addition to the fatality, eight other residents were transported to area hospitals for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been publicly released.
