Detroit and University of Olivet Mourn the Passing of Maurice Lewis
DETROIT, Mich. The University of Olivet and the Detroit community are mourning the unexpected death of Maurice Lewis, a beloved coach, educator, and mentor whose passing this week has left family, friends, and colleagues heartbroken.
Maurice Lewis was known as a devoted son, brother, friend, and coach whose life was centered on uplifting others through education, athletics, and leadership. A proud Detroit native, Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree in Fitness Management from the University of Olivet, where he made a lasting impression both on and off campus.
After graduating from Olivet, Lewis dedicated his career to the development of young people. He served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Valley Forge, worked as a Health and Physical Education teacher, and owned Detroit Sports World, a business focused on athletics, training, and community engagement. In every role, he was recognized for his passion, discipline, and unwavering belief in the potential of those he coached and taught.
Tributes have poured in from former classmates, colleagues, mentors, and community members who remembered Lewis for his perseverance, leadership, and commitment to excellence. Linda Logan, an Olivet alumna and his fraternity advisor, shared a heartfelt message honoring his legacy and the pride he brought to the university and his fraternity.
