The Fort Wayne and Markle communities are in mourning following the passing of 18-year-old Adlee Scheerer, a fire cadet and dedicated student-athlete, who lost his life in an accident early Sunday morning. The news has deeply affected northeastern Indiana, touching neighbors, classmates, teammates, and first responders who knew Adlee for his character, leadership, and strong commitment to serving others.
The Markle Fire Department & Rescue confirmed Adlee’s death in a heartfelt message shared by Chief Jon Gray. In his statement, Chief Gray remembered Adlee as a committed firefighter-in-training and a positive, caring presence within both the department and the wider community.
“Adlee was not only a dedicated firefighter, but also a genuinely kind and uplifting individual,” Chief Gray shared. “He had a way of brightening every room with his smile and welcoming spirit. Adlee cared deeply about his community and his friends, always offering encouragement, laughter, and support. Although his life ended far too soon, the positivity he shared and the lives he touched will never be forgotten. We remember him for his courage, compassion, and that unforgettable smile. Rest easy, brother—we will take it from here.”
Chief Gray also asked the public to keep Adlee’s family, friends, and members of the Markle Fire Department in their thoughts during this difficult period. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist Adlee’s family as they navigate the days ahead.
The Wells County Sheriff’s Office released a separate statement expressing sorrow over the loss and extending condolences to Adlee’s loved ones and his fellow firefighters.
In addition to his service as a fire cadet, Adlee was a respected leader in Indiana’s hockey community. He played as a forward and served as captain of the Carroll High School hockey team, where he was known for his determination, teamwork, and unselfish leadership on the ice. Adlee attended Huntington North High School and was a resident of Huntington, Indiana.
