Actress Catherine O’Hara Dies at 71 Known for Roles in Home Alone and Schitt’s Creek

CATHERINE O’HARA, O’Hara’s time at the Second City in the 1970s propelled her comedic career and led to the creation of the sketch comedy series “S.C.T.V.,” in which she starred alongside John Candy, Rick Moranis, and Eugene Levy. The show helped launch the careers of other top Canadian comedians, including Martin Short and Andrea Martin.
After leaving the Second City, O’Hara continued to collaborate with Levy for decades. Levy, who played her husband Johnny Rose on “Schitt’s Creek,” also co-starred with her in “Waiting for Guffman,” “Best in Show,” “A Mighty Wind,” and “For Your Consideration.”
The series created by Levy and his son Dan about a wealthy family forced to live in a small town went on to dominate the Emmys in its sixth and final season. It brought O’Hara a new generation of fans and placed her at the center of cultural attention.
The Toronto native won two Emmys, a Golden Globe, American and Canadian Comedy Awards, and two SAG Awards during her career.
O’Hara also earned Emmy nominations for her dramatic role in HBO’s “The Last of Us” and for her recent performance as a Hollywood producer in “The Studio.”
She is survived by her husband, Bo Welch, and their sons, Matthew and Luke.
