East Sandwich Tragedy left the community mourning after authorities identified 3-year-old Riley Cochrane as the child who died following a vehicle-pedestrian crash on Sunday, December 7.

Sandwich, Mass. — A joint statement from Cape and Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois and Sandwich Police Chief Jason Keene identified Riley Cochrane, 3, as the child who died after being struck by a vehicle in East Sandwich. Emergency responders were called at about 3:30 p.m. to Service Road, between Quaker Meetinghouse Road and Chase Road, after a report that a pedestrian had been hit.

When responders arrived, they found the injured child and transported Riley to a nearby hospital, where the child later died. Service Road, described as a two-lane roadway running parallel to Route 6, was partially closed while investigators examined the scene.

Officials said the driver remained at the location and has been cooperating with investigators. No charges have been announced, and authorities emphasized that the investigation remains active. Because of the sensitive nature of the case and the age of the child, officials said no further details were released on Sunday.

In a statement, the District Attorney’s office offered condolences to the family and loved ones and said more information would be provided when appropriate as the investigation continues.
