Chicago West Loop: Brant Dykehouse Death Under Investigation, Authorities Share Details

Chicago, IL — Friends, colleagues, and former classmates are mourning the loss of Brant R. Dykehouse, 54, whose passing last weekend has left many across multiple communities grieving a cherished friend and respected professional.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Dykehouse following an incident reported Saturday afternoon in the 700 block of West Jackson Boulevard in Chicago’s West Loop. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chicago police say the circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation. Authorities have also stated there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

Dykehouse was a longtime Chicago resident originally from Richland, Michigan, and was remembered by friends as someone who built a meaningful academic and professional life. He studied at Loyola University Chicago and Lake Forest College and graduated from Gull Lake High School. Those who knew him say he was dedicated to his work as a therapist and made a lasting difference in the lives of the people he supported.

In the days since his passing, friends and former classmates have shared tributes reflecting on the many chapters of his life, including friendships formed during time spent living abroad in Japan.

Sarah Barbour, a longtime friend, shared a remembrance of their friendship in Yamaguchi-ken and the memories they built over the years. She described Dykehouse as stylish, warm, welcoming, and thoughtful—someone who loved hosting friends, sharing meals, listening with care, and bringing laughter into a room.

“He was funny and kind and gracious,” Barbour wrote while reflecting on their years-long friendship. She also recalled a reunion in Chicago during a travel delay, describing time spent together at Millennium Park and the joy he brought to her family. “He was enjoying his job as a therapist. He was in love. He was happy, and I’m so glad I have that memory of him.”

Friends have also described Dykehouse as someone with whom conversations could resume naturally, even after long gaps in time, a quality that made his relationships feel enduring and easy. His passing, they say, has left a deeply personal void for many.

Dykehouse’s memory continues to resonate through the lives he touched across Chicago, Michigan, Japan, and beyond. Friends and loved ones are sharing stories, photos, and messages of remembrance honoring his kindness, humor, and the impact he made on those around him.

Funeral arrangements and memorial details have not yet been publicly announced.
