Authorities responded to an active shooter alert Wednesday near Sheppard Elementary School at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, prompting an immediate lockdown and a large emergency response.
Base security forces and local law enforcement agencies converged on the area after receiving reports of possible gunfire near the school, which is located inside the military installation. Officials issued a base-wide notification urging personnel and families to shelter in place while the situation was assessed.
Parents were instructed not to approach the school during the lockdown, and law enforcement established a secure perimeter as they investigated the source of the report.
As of the latest update, no injuries have been reported, and authorities have not confirmed whether shots were actually fired. Officials say the alert was issued out of an abundance of caution due to the proximity of the report to the elementary school.
Security forces continue to sweep the area, and additional updates from Sheppard Air Force Base leadership are expected as the investigation develops.
