Montrose Resident Avanelle Abraham Dies After Chaguanas Street Shooting

Chaguanas, Trinidad — The Montrose neighborhood was shaken Thursday afternoon when 38-year-old Avanelle Abraham was fatally shot on Maraj Street. Residents report that a single gunshot rang out at precisely 4:58 p.m., cutting through the quiet evening and immediately plunging the area into chaos. Witnesses described the scene as terrifying, with a silver vehicle speeding south along the residential street shortly after the shot was fired.
Avanelle Abraham, a familiar face in Montrose, was found lying in the roadway with a grey cushion positioned beneath her legs. Authorities confirmed she had been shot once in the left side of her head. Despite the rapid arrival of police from the Central Division Task Force seventeen minutes later, nothing could be done to save her. The District Medical Officer later confirmed her passing at the scene, and her body was transported to the Forensic Science Centre for a full autopsy.
Police investigators have been combing the area for evidence, conducting interviews, and canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses. No arrests have been made so far, and the silver vehicle seen fleeing the scene has not yet been identified. Authorities have not determined whether the shooting was targeted or random, leaving the community anxious and searching for answers.
Montrose residents expressed shock and fear in the aftermath of the shooting. Many described Abraham as well-known, warm, and friendly, often seen engaging with neighbors and participating in community activities. Her sudden death has left a void in the neighborhood and raised serious concerns about safety.
Investigators are pursuing all possible leads, including potential motives, previous threats, or unresolved disputes. The swift nature of the attack suggests planning, though police emphasize that conclusions cannot be drawn until evidence is fully verified.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the silver vehicle or the circumstances of the shooting to contact police immediately. Community cooperation, they stress, will be essential in moving the investigation forward.
Family, friends, and neighbors continue to mourn the loss of Avanelle Abraham. Local leaders have offered condolences, noting the emotional toll the tragedy has taken on the Montrose community. As the investigation continues, residents hold onto hope for justice while grappling with the heartbreaking loss of a woman who meant so much to those around her.
