Authorities Investigate Fatal Incident Involving Traverse City Parking Services Worker

A homicide investigation is underway in Traverse City after a city employee was found deceased early Sunday morning inside the Larry C. Hardy Parking Deck, in what authorities say is connected to an attempted murder of a police officer the night before.
At approximately 7:48 a.m. on November 16, officers responded to the 300 block of East State Street after receiving a report of an unresponsive person. When police arrived, they discovered 32-year-old Lawrence Boyd IV, a member of the city’s Parking Services Department, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. His identity was made public with the approval of his family.
Investigators have now confirmed that Boyd’s death is linked to an incident that occurred the previous night, November 15, around 10:30 p.m. In that case, two teenagers from Traverse City were taken into custody after allegedly stealing items from a vehicle and fleeing from officers. During the pursuit, a 17-year-old suspect reportedly fired multiple rounds at police. One bullet struck the pant leg of an officer, but no injuries occurred.
Both teens remain held at the Grand Traverse County Jail. Charges include attempted homicide, larceny from a vehicle, and resisting and obstructing law enforcement. Police also confirmed the firearm believed to have been used in both incidents has been recovered.
Authorities emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public. A shelter-in-place alert issued Saturday night has been lifted. The State Street parking deck remains temporarily closed as detectives continue processing the scene. Police Chief Matt Richmond noted the closure may extend through Monday as the investigation continues.
Interim City Manager Benjamin Marentette expressed condolences to Boyd’s family and support for city employees, stating:
“This tragedy is heartbreaking. We extend our deepest sympathies and love to the family of Lawrence Boyd IV, a teammate in our Parking Services Department. I also want to thank the Traverse City Police Department and partner agencies for their swift response, which prevented further harm. Support services are being provided to all city staff.”
The investigation remains active, and officials expect to release additional updates as more information becomes available.
