Driver Allegedly High on Meth Charged After Fatal Hit-and-Run of 8-Year-Old in Florida

WINTER HAVEN FLORIDA, A Winter Haven, Florida woman who admitted being high on methamphetamine has been charged in a hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of an 8-year-old boy and left a 10-year-old critically injured.
Victoria Johnson, 30, was taken into custody on March 12, 2026, following a crash that occurred around 8:30 p.m. on March 11 near Faith Baptist Church on Crystal Beach Road, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said the two boys, who were not related, were attending a church function and were crossing Crystal Beach Road to get cupcakes when they were struck by a northbound vehicle that fled the scene. The 8-year-old boy died from his injuries, while the 10-year-old suffered a broken arm, a broken femur, and a skull fracture. He remains in critical but stable condition at Arnold Palmer Hospital, according to reports.
Witnesses reported seeing a dark-colored SUV leave the scene. Surveillance footage also captured a vehicle matching that description driving away shortly after the crash.
The following day, Johnson contacted deputies to report that her dark blue 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe had been stolen. When deputies located her, authorities said she gave conflicting statements before eventually admitting she had been driving the night of the crash and believed she may have struck someone.
Investigators said Johnson also admitted she had used methamphetamine before driving and later gave the vehicle to Charles Cory Stewart, whom she had allegedly used meth with earlier, telling him to get rid of it.
A preliminary search of the recovered SUV revealed damage and missing parts consistent with a pedestrian crash. Stewart was also taken into custody on charges of resisting arrest and drug possession.
According to the sheriff’s office, a background check revealed Johnson had previously been arrested for DUI in November 2025. At the time of the crash, she was reportedly driving with a suspended license.
During a court appearance by video on Friday, Johnson faced several charges, including leaving the scene of a crash involving death, leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury, tampering with evidence, driving without a license causing death, and providing false information to law enforcement.
Authorities said Johnson remains in custody for violating a previous probation.
A spokesperson for Polk County Schools confirmed that the child who died was a student at Boswell Elementary School.
“This is a terribly sad day for Boswell Elementary and our community,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “The child and his parents are beloved members of the Boswell family.”
Officials said the child was well-liked by classmates and teachers and was known for his positive spirit, friendly nature, and willingness to help others. The school community has expressed grief over the loss and continues to offer support to those affected.
