North Carolina Authorities File Charges in Unlicensed Dental Practice Case

RALEIGH NORTH CAROLINA, A 42-year-old woman has been charged with operating a dental practice without a license, according to court records and local authorities.
Ebony Nicohole McBean is accused of opening a business in Raleigh despite not holding a dental degree or license. Investigators allege she represented herself as having more than 15 years of experience as an orthodontic assistant before launching her own practice.
According to reports, patients were charged between $4,000 and $5,280 for orthodontic services, including braces. Several individuals later reported experiencing pain and complications that required follow-up treatment from licensed dental professionals.
McBean’s business, known as The Smiling Face Company, reportedly closed in October following complaints from clients. Some patients have stated they were unable to obtain refunds, records, or additional services after the practice shut down.
Authorities allege that McBean informed patients she worked in connection with Dr. Darren Ramsey, who was listed as the dental medical director and provider on certain invoices. However, arrest warrants state that McBean had no official affiliation with Ramsey. Public records indicate that Ramsey’s dental license was listed as being on probation.
Court documents show McBean was charged with practicing medicine without a license and three felony counts of obtaining property by false pretense. She was arrested on February 14 and later posted a $3,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon.
The case comes amid broader concerns raised by the State Board of Dental Examiners regarding individuals posing as licensed professionals and providing unauthorized dental services. The investigation remains ongoing.
