University of South Carolina spokesperson Jeff Stensland confirmed that Peterson was a first-year student at USC. According to the university, she was from Sumter, South Carolina, and was majoring in chemistry. Her death occurred at the 650 Lincoln student housing complex.

SLED said it was asked to investigate by the University of South Carolina Police Department and confirmed the investigation remains active and ongoing. No additional details have been released.

A large law enforcement presence in the area prompted a temporary shutdown of Lincoln Street during a USC men’s basketball game Tuesday night. The roadway has since reopened.

University officials said Student Affairs and counseling services are offering support to students, faculty, and staff affected by the loss, as the campus community mourns the death of a young student.
