Salmen High School Assistant Principal Alvin Garabold Dies in Murder-Suicide

ALVIN GARABOLD, an assistant principal at Salmen High School, has died following what officials described as a tragic incident, according to St. Tammany Parish Schools.
School leaders informed staff of Garabold’s death on Wednesday morning and later issued an automated call to parents. The district said mental health counselors have been made available on campus to support students and staff as the school community mourns the loss.
Garabold was appointed assistant principal at Salmen High School in August 2023. Prior to that role, he served as dean of students at Bonnabel High School in Jefferson Parish, according to NOLA.com. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science from Jackson State University and later completed a specialist certification in educational leadership at Capella University.
Authorities said Garabold was the victim in a homicide that occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20, near the intersection of Governor Nicholls Street and North Villere Street in New Orleans. Officials have described the case as a murder-suicide, and the New Orleans Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The St. Tammany Parish Schools community said it continues to grieve the loss of Garabold, remembering him for his leadership, service, and dedication to students.
