Andres Arizmendi Arrested After Vehicle Chase and Shooting Incident in Harlingen
Shots fired after a vehicle chase in Harlingen prompted a large police response on Christmas Day, as authorities investigated an aggravated assault involving a deadly weapon.
HARLINGEN, Texas — According to the Harlingen Police Department, the incident began along Commerce Street near an H-E-B store and continued toward the area near Peter Piper Pizza before coming to an end at a major intersection.
Police said the pursuit concluded Friday afternoon at the intersection of East Harrison Avenue and Business 77, where multiple law enforcement agencies responded. Officers from Harlingen police, Cameron County authorities, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and emergency medical services converged on the scene. Crime scene tape was placed around the area as investigators conducted their work.
In a news release, police identified Andres Arizmendi as a suspect wanted in connection with an aggravated assault involving a family member. Authorities stated that Arizmendi fled the scene and is believed to be armed and dangerous. Members of the public were urged not to approach him and to contact law enforcement with any information regarding his whereabouts.
A city spokesperson confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the general public and noted that all law enforcement personnel involved in the response are safe.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area as traffic was rerouted during the investigation. Officials continued working to gather evidence and determine the full sequence of events leading up to the chase and reported gunfire.
