Community members in Chicago are calling for accountability after a widely shared video showed a mother and her children being confronted and injured near Orville Bright Elementary School on the city’s Far South Side. The incident took place Monday afternoon and has sparked concern and frustration throughout the South Deering neighborhood.

On Tuesday morning, dozens of parents gathered outside the school, urging administrators to take action and calling for consequences for the students involved. Many shared that concerns about behavior in the area had been raised before and said this situation has heightened those worries.

According to Chicago police, the incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. in the 10600 block of South Bensley Avenue. Investigators say 33-year-old Carshawnda Hatter and her children were walking home when a group of juveniles approached and struck them multiple times. Both Hatter and her 9-year-old son were taken to Trinity Hospital in serious condition.

A video circulating online shows Hatter and her children walking along the sidewalk as a crowd of students follows behind. Moments later, several individuals move toward the family, and the situation escalates quickly. The video has drawn widespread attention, prompting calls for increased safety measures.

Hatter spoke outside the school on Tuesday, expressing fear and frustration about the experience. She said her son has dealt with bullying before and hopes that this incident prompts meaningful change. Supporters at the scene voiced encouragement and called for a stronger response from both school officials and parents.

Chicago police say the motive remains under investigation, and no arrests had been made as of Tuesday afternoon. Chicago Public Schools has not yet issued an official statement regarding disciplinary actions or next steps.

The investigation is ongoing.
