Authorities in Hancock County say an 81-year-old man died early Tuesday morning following a single-vehicle crash in Portage Township. The incident occurred around 4:24 a.m. on Township Road 21, just west of State Route 613, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

Investigators determined that the driver, identified as Arthur Patterson Jr., had been traveling westbound when his vehicle failed to navigate a curve in the roadway. The car left the left side of the road and overturned, prompting an immediate response from emergency crews.

First responders arrived quickly, but Patterson was pronounced deceased at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash. Officials have not yet released further information about what may have contributed to the accident, and the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not indicated whether weather, roadway conditions, or a possible medical issue may have played a role.

Local emergency personnel and roadway crews assisted at the scene as officials worked to secure the area and clear the site. Additional updates are expected as the investigation continues.
