Officials Review Incident Involving Officer’s Interaction With Local Resident

Newly released footage from the San Francisco Police Department has prompted an internal review after officers were involved in an encounter with a man and his off-leash dog on November 9. The video, recorded on body-worn cameras, shows a series of commands given to the individual, later identified as Trusten Eaton, as officers attempted to stop him during a response to a reported disturbance.
According to SFPD, officers approached Eaton after receiving a call that a dog had allegedly bitten a passerby in the Market Street area. The individual who reported the incident informed police that he wished to pursue the matter further. When officers located Eaton walking with his dog, they issued repeated instructions to stop.
The footage shows Eaton continuing to walk away as officers followed on foot. SFPD stated that the dog appeared agitated during the interaction, prompting officers to approach with caution. Officials say that during an attempt to detain Eaton, the dog moved toward one of the officers, leading to a rapid escalation.
Police reported that one officer stepped backward as the dog advanced and discharged his service weapon, injuring the animal. Eaton then approached the officer, at which point the situation intensified. Officers said Eaton was also injured during the encounter. Additional officers arrived shortly afterward, and Eaton was taken into custody. The dog also received medical attention.
Authorities confirmed that both Eaton and the dog survived and were treated for their injuries. Eaton was later booked on several allegations, including delaying or obstructing an officer and matters related to the reported biting incident.
SFPD released a statement emphasizing its commitment to transparency and the importance of reviewing all uses of force. Police Chief Paul Yep noted that the department is continuing to examine the full circumstances surrounding the event to ensure all procedures were followed appropriately.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials stated that additional information will be shared once the review is complete.
