Mel Smith Road Incident: Fatal Domestic Shooting Under Active Investigation
Mel Smith Road — Authorities are investigating a deadly domestic shooting that occurred early Saturday morning inside an apartment located in an unincorporated area outside New Albany.
The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) received a 911 call at approximately 5:39 a.m. on November 15, 2025, reporting a disturbance involving family members. While deputies were on their way, dispatchers received additional information indicating that shots had been fired inside the residence.
When officers arrived, they encountered a domestic incident involving a mother and her two adult sons. Deputies secured the scene and immediately began providing medical aid to one of the men who had suffered gunshot wounds. The second male remained at the scene and fully cooperated with law enforcement.
The injured individual was transported to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries.
Detectives with the Floyd County Criminal Investigations Division (CID) have taken over the case, processing the scene and collecting evidence. Early findings indicate the shooting may have occurred in self-defense, though officials caution that the investigation is still in its early stages.
The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the incident was isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Authorities say additional information will be released as the investigation continues. The case remains active.
