UCSD Student August Bargreen Remembered Months After Girlfriend’s Fatal Accident
UC San Diego Student Community Mourns the Death of August Bargreen
The UC San Diego community is mourning the loss of August Bargreen, an international business major who passed away last weekend. University officials said his death is being treated as a suspected suicide, and the school has shared support resources for students and others impacted by the news.
Bargreen, who was also pursuing a minor in finance, was widely known for his leadership, academic focus, and involvement in campus life. He served as president of his fraternity and was remembered by friends and classmates as outgoing, driven, and supportive of those around him. Many described him as a cherished son, brother, and friend whose presence left a lasting impression.
His death comes just months after the passing of his girlfriend, UCSD chemical engineering student Sonja Strom of Castle Rock, Colorado, who died in September. Strom’s death deeply affected members of the university community, including the Alpha Phi community where she held a leadership position as Vice President of New Member Education & Member Experience.
In a statement shared after Strom’s death, the chapter described her as someone who brought warmth and positivity to those around her and worked hard to help others feel included. She was recognized for academic excellence, leadership, and the way she consistently encouraged and uplifted her peers.
Originally from Castle Rock, Strom was remembered as a vibrant young woman whose involvement in school activities, sports, volunteer efforts, and local organizations made her a valued part of her hometown community. Friends and family recalled her enthusiasm for learning and her ability to balance responsibilities with creativity, energy, and joy.
Her family held a celebration of life on September 15, honoring her love for family, her adventurous spirit, and the positive influence she had on others. She is survived by her parents, Peter and Christine, her sister Annika, and extended family members who continue to honor her memory.
Following the loss of both students, UC San Diego has encouraged members of the campus community to seek support and lean on available services. Counselors and crisis-response teams have been made available to assist students, staff, and faculty as they cope with grief and process recent events.
University administrators also expressed condolences and emphasized the importance of connection, care, and reaching out for help during difficult moments.
Investigations into both deaths remain ongoing.
