Alabama Man Injured While Protecting Student During Bonfire Shooting Incident

An Alabama resident is being recognized for his bravery after he was seriously injured while trying to protect friends during a shooting that later claimed the life of high school student Kimber Mills.
According to investigators, 21-year-old Silas McCay was struck multiple times after confronting an armed suspect during a gathering in a wooded area known as “The Pit” in Pinson, Alabama. McCay told local media that he viewed Kimber as a younger sister and did everything he could to help her during the incident.
Authorities say the suspect, 27-year-old Steven Tyler Whitehead, had reportedly been bothering Kimber before the situation escalated. McCay said he and another individual confronted the suspect, after which the shooting occurred. He survived his injuries, while Kimber suffered critical wounds and was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Whitehead has been taken into custody and is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder. Officials said he is being held on bond as the investigation continues.
Kimber’s sister, Ashley Mills, shared that the 18-year-old passed away on October 21st surrounded by loved ones. She described Kimber as kind, energetic, and deeply loved by her community. A senior at Cleveland High School, Kimber was active in cheerleading and track and had plans to pursue nursing.
Family members and friends expressed that Kimber’s generosity continues through her decision to be an organ donor, a wish she had previously shared. Loved ones described her as a bright presence whose positivity touched many lives.
Classmates and relatives remembered Kimber for her warm personality and supportive nature. They hope she will be remembered for the joy she brought to others rather than the circumstances of her passing.
As the community mourns, residents are offering support to Kimber’s family and to those recovering from the tragedy. Many are finding comfort in honoring her memory and reflecting on the impact she had on the people around her.
